New Years’ Resolutions are one of the most prominent topics surrounding this time of year, but how can we stick to them?
Inevitable Statistics
At the end of the year and the beginning of the year, there are countless posts and conversations about “New Years’ Resolutions”, which are great ideas, but they never seem to be successfully executed. Over 80% of resolutions fail by February. According to a number of fitness and diet apps, January 19th is the most common day for people to essentially ‘give up’ on their resolutions. There is a certain point where the motivation or adrenaline wears off, and you’re left feeling tired and essentially defeated.
Self- Esteem vs Willpower
There is a belief that these resolutions are entirely based off of willpower and that you won’t succeed without strong willpower. While this has some truth to it, there is also some inaccuracy. Resolutions are primarily based on self-esteem. If you have a mentality that you’re going to fail, then you most likely will. Mindset can change everything whether we realize it or not, our subconscious affects everything we do.
You don’t have to be the most confident person on this planet, but you will need to change your mindset if you want to succeed. Do not say “I can’t”. You can do whatever you set your mind to, as cliche as it sounds, it’s true. You might need to work up to your end goal, but with the right self-esteem, not only will you conquer short-term goals, but you can also conquer your resolutions for 2023!
The Cycle
Heading into the New Year, everything seems to be off to a great start, but by December 31st, we almost forget our resolution. It seems to be something that happens to everyone, including ourselves. Unfortunately, this happens multiple times throughout the year as well. We set a number of goals that are either too high or we don’t have the self-esteem to follow through. Again, the most notable is the infamous “New Years’ Resolution”, but if we let so many other goals pass us by throughout the year, then why shouldn’t we let our New Years’ Resolution do the same??
If we get into the habit of doing this on a yearly basis, then we are preventing numerous other things in our lives. It all correlates. Don’t make unrealistic goals, and you’ll be less likely to fail, which adds more self-esteem and success in your day-to-day life, which leads to a successful New Years’ Resolution, and so on.
Accountability
A primary reason for failures is we try to do everything on our own. The hard truth is that we just can’t. Without support, we crumble. It is crucial to find some form of accountability to help us achieve our goals. Whether it is setting a reminder on your phone, having a friend right there with you, or even reaching out to a professional, there are many forms of accountability on many different levels. We are more than happy to help you if you are in need of any goal-setting, accountability help, and beyond!
Looking Towards the Future
What do you want December 31st, 2023 to look like? Most likely, you will want success, happiness, money, or something along that line. If you don’t make any changes, odds are, your December 31st isn’t going to look much different than the life you’re living today. By taking action and accountability and sticking with whatever your Resolution is, you WILL see results a year from now, and they’re most likely the results that you were hoping for.
